Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has revealed he was close to joining Arsenal. As a youngster before the north London club backed out of the deal.
Valverde, who rose through the Real Madrid youth ranks has become a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Which have won three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues, since making his senior debut in 2017.

Ten years ago, when Arsene Wenger was still in charge. Valverde was invited to trial with the Gunners’ first-team for a week. And had the chance to rub shoulders with Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez and Hector Bellerin.
“I was 16 years old,” the midfielder told Marca of his trial.
“At that time it was like, this is my club. I’m going to grow here (at Arsenal).”
“In Uruguay, the Premier League has a great audience. I can imagine my future there. I enjoy it and I train with amazing players.”
Valverde went on to explain that Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Who was a reserve keeper for the Gunners at the time, supported him during his trial.
“I don’t know if he’ll laugh at me. But Dibou (Martinez) is one of the people who helped me the most in everything. Along with Bellerin, Alexis Sanchez and Cazorla,” he continued.
“I don’t know English and they had to explain the whole job to me.”
“I’ve competed with big names in the Uruguayan league. And I feel ready to take the next step to a higher level,”
Arsenal opted not to sign the player, who has made almost 200 appearances for Los Blancos. During a successful seven-year spell at the club.
